FAQ · STRAIGHT ANSWERS FROM A CRAFTSMAN
Costs, process, products, and everything homeowners actually ask us. If your question is not here, call (248) 622-9845 and we will answer it.
Honest answer: it depends on the home, and anyone who quotes you a price without seeing it is guessing with your money. The real drivers are size, surface condition, prep and repairs needed, trim detail, and the products chosen. That is why every project starts with a free, in-person project consultation and ends in a written estimate with the exact number, before any work begins.
Because you are not being quoted the same job. The low quote usually means thin coats over minimal prep with builder-grade paint, and it looks fine right up until it peels. Ours includes the hours of cleaning, sanding, repairs, priming, and caulking that make a finish last, plus premium Sherwin-Williams & Benjamin Moore Paints. When you compare quotes, compare what is actually in them: prep scope, number of coats, product lines, and who is accountable for the result.
For a powder room refresh, DIY can make sense. For whole rooms, exteriors, or cabinets, the difference shows fast: surface prep, product selection, spray equipment, tall ladder work, and clean lines are where projects go wrong. Most of our DIY-rescue calls end up costing more than hiring us first would have.
Sometimes, if the scope truly matches. Usually, the cheapest quote is the most expensive one, paid for three years later when the finish fails and everything gets redone. A paint job’s real cost is price divided by years it lasts, and prep-heavy craftsman work wins that math comfortably.
No. The written estimate is the price, the scope is spelled out, and we do not upsell. If we find a genuine surprise mid-project, like hidden rot behind siding, we stop, show you, and agree on any change before touching it.
Book your Free Project Consultation, and if your interior project qualifies, the discount is locked into your written estimate. Spots are limited each month because our crews are, so the sooner you book, the safer your slot.
Completely free, in person, and with zero obligation. The visit is how we scope honestly, and it is also how you get a feel for who you would be hiring. If we are not the right fit, you keep the written estimate with our honest read of what your home needs.
Typical ranges: a single room in 1 to 2 days, whole-home interiors in 3 to 7, exteriors in 3 to 6 working days depending on size, repairs, and weather, and kitchen cabinets in about 4 to 6 including cure time. Your estimate includes a specific timeline, and we hold ourselves to it.
No. Many customers hand us a key or a garage code and go about their lives. You get updates as the work progresses, and Branden walks the finished project with you at the end.
Leave the heavy work to us. We move and cover furniture, protect floors and fixtures, and put everything back. Small valuables and wall items are the only things we ask you to tuck away.
We watch the forecast and only paint when surfaces are dry and temperatures sit inside the product’s window. If weather interrupts, we pause, protect the work, and resume when conditions are right. Quality beats the calendar, every time.
It moves with the season. Interiors can often start within a couple of weeks; exterior slots fill fastest from late spring through fall. Consultations happen within days, and booking early locks your preferred dates.
Four steps: a Free Project Consultation where we listen and scope honestly; colors and scheduling, with consultation included; craftsman execution, meaning meticulous surface prep first and premium coatings after; and a final walkthrough together, because it is not done until you are proud of it.
Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore Paints, chosen line by line for the surface and the exposure. Brand alone doesn’t make a finish last, but a premium exterior line flexes through freeze-thaw and holds color under UV in a way builder-grade paint doesn’t. We pick the product after we’ve seen the substrate, and the line we’re using is written into your estimate.
Yes. The interior lines we use are low-VOC or zero-VOC, so the smell clears fast and rooms go back into normal use quickly. We still ventilate while we work, keep the work area sealed off, and tell you which rooms to stay out of and for how long.
With real prep and premium coatings, interiors commonly hold 8 to 10 years and exteriors 8 to 12, depending on surface and exposure. Prep is what moves that number. A finish put over failing caulk or unprimed repairs can fail in three.
Prep is most of the job, and it’s the part that disappears from a cheap quote. Washing, scraping, sanding, wood repair, caulking, and spot priming all come before a finish coat goes anywhere. The prep you never see is what makes the finish you see every day.
Yes, and it’s included. Colors and scheduling are step two of our process, so you get help matching the palette to your light, your trim, and the rest of the house before anything is ordered.
We stand behind every project. It isn’t finished until we’ve walked it together at the end and you’re happy with what you’re looking at. If something isn’t right, we come back.
