Put your quotes side by side on the kitchen table and don’t start with the number at the bottom. Start with what each one leaves out.
That’s the whole exercise, and almost nobody does it, because the bottom line is the only field that appears on every quote in identical form. Everything above it is written differently by each contractor, which is exactly where the difference lives.
We get called into houses two and three years after somebody else painted them, often enough that the pattern is boring. The finish is failing, the homeowner is holding a quote they thought was a bargain, and every single thing that went wrong was already visible on the paperwork the day they signed it.
Cheap Quotes Aren’t Cheaper. They’re Smaller.
Nobody sells the same job for half. Painting is labor, and labor is hours, and hours can only come out of one place: the part of the work you cannot see once it’s finished.
The line items that disappear are always the same ones. Washing becomes a rinse. Full scraping becomes spot scraping. Existing caulk gets left alone. Bare wood doesn’t get spot primed. Two coats become one coat called two. Wood repair gets excluded quietly, so that rot discovered on day two becomes a change order rather than a promise kept.
None of that is visible when the crew drives away. All of it is visible in three winters.
Michigan Is Unusually Good at Finding the Omission
A milder climate might let a thin job coast for years. Here, water gets into an open caulk joint, freezes, expands, pries the gap a little wider, thaws, and lets more water in. Repeat dozens of times between November and March. Coating applied over chalk or dirt never bonded properly to begin with, so the first cycle that gets water behind it starts lifting the film from underneath.
Interior work fails differently and just as reliably. Nail pops that were painted over instead of reset come back through by the second heating season. Water stains covered with another coat of latex bleed through, because tannin and rust need a stain-blocking primer and a color coat isn’t one.
Road salt does the rest of the work outside. Every plowed subdivision street in Oakland County throws spray onto lower siding, garage doors and porch columns from December through March, and salt chews on a coating from the bottom up. A film that bonded properly shrugs at it for years. A film sitting on top of chalk lets go at the first edge it finds.
How to Read a Quote Line by Line
Six things, in this order, on every quote you’re holding:
- The prep steps, written out. The word “prep” alone means nothing. You want washing, scraping, sanding, repairs, caulking and priming named individually, with what’s included in each.
- The number of coats, and over what. Two coats over unprimed bare wood is one coat of primer the job never got.
- The product lines by name. The brand alone doesn’t tell you anything, because every manufacturer makes a builder-grade line and a premium line. Ask which line, on which surface.
- Who owns the surprises. Rot behind siding, plaster that opens up, wallpaper glue that won’t come off. A quote that’s silent on this has made it your problem by default.
- The timeline. Compare it against the scope. A whole exterior promised in two days is a statement about what’s being skipped, since most homes here run 3 to 6 working days. Whole-home interiors run 3 to 7.
- Who’s accountable afterward. A company with a name on the door and a local address behaves differently from a crew that will be in another county by spring.
Any quote missing three or more of those isn’t a lower price for the same work. It’s a different, smaller job, and the two aren’t comparable no matter how similar the bottom lines look.

The Arithmetic That Settles It
A paint job’s real cost is the price divided by the years it lasts, and it’s the only comparison that survives contact with reality.
With genuine prep and premium coatings, exteriors in Michigan hold 8 to 12 years depending on surface and exposure. Interiors commonly hold 8 to 10. A job that fails at three isn’t a discount on that. It’s a shorter-lived product sold at a lower price, and when it fails you don’t pay the difference. You pay the whole thing again, plus the cost of stripping somebody else’s failure off your house first, which is usually the more expensive half.
Most of the rescue work we do would have been cheaper as the original job.
Timing makes the gap wider than the arithmetic suggests. A finish that fails at three years usually fails visibly in spring, which is the exact moment every crew in the county books out for the season. So the repair waits, the exposed wood takes another summer of UV and another winter of freeze-thaw, and by the time somebody gets to it the carpentry line has grown. The cheap quote didn’t only cost you a second paint job. It cost you the trim it was supposed to protect.
What a Higher Quote Should Actually Contain
Paying more is only worth it when the extra buys something specific, so here’s what it should buy.
Hours in prep, itemized. Premium exterior and interior lines from Sherwin-Williams & Benjamin Moore Paints, chosen for freeze-thaw flexibility, moisture resistance and UV stability rather than for the price per gallon. Carpentry included where wood has gone soft, so problems get fixed instead of coated. A written scope with the timeline in it. If a higher quote doesn’t spell those out, it’s just a higher number, and you should treat it with the same suspicion as the low one.

A recently painted exterior with sound caulk and no bare wood really does need less work than a chalking one, and an honest contractor will say so. Compare the written scopes first; if they match, take the better price without guilt.
What Does It Cost to Fix a Failed Paint Job?
More than the original job would have, because you pay for removal before you pay for painting. Peeling film has to come off, chalking has to be washed and often bond primed, and any rot that grew under a lifted edge is carpentry now. The paint itself is the small part.
Why Do Some Painters Refuse to Quote Over the Phone?
